Marina Park, Newport Beach

R/Hdo has been selected by the City of Newport Beach to develop the Schematic Design Plan for Marina Park – a new 10 acre park located on the Newport Peninsula. We originally began studying the potential for a park on the site with the community group Protect Our Parks in 2004. Through this effort we developed a consensus ‘vision’ between the City Council, the Newport Harbor Commission, and Protect Our Parks. The Master Plan provides a “window to the bay” the only major view opportunity to the bay on the peninsula. Other uses are proposed to include an improved sand beach, a youth sailing center, visiting vessel slips, play areas and open lawn areas for informal picnicking. We’re looking ahead to making this important resource available for the people and guests of Newport Beach.

Theme Parks and Entertainment

With theme park and entertainment development taking off all over the globe, R/Hdo has been taking off, as well. Recent trips have taken staff to the Middle East China and Korea. Entertainment, retail, hotels, residential and all kinds of combinations in between, have all been the focus of hard work, creative flashes and a lot of studio time. Much of the work is confidential; some of it is experimental; all of it is exciting.

Oasis Senior Center

Building on our successful project with Robert Coffee Architects, The Dorothy and Donald Kennedy Wing of the Bowers Museum, we have begun work on the addition to The Oasis Senior Center in Newport Beach. Given the climate in Corona Del Mar, the primary space, a central courtyard will be able to function as an outdoor room, hosting a variety of activities in a pleasing, green space.

South Korea Resort

We are working on two assignments on Jeju Island in South Korea. The Jeju Mountain Resort for Anwans Development will include a hotel, residential villas, a corporate retreat, and a urban entertainment complex. We recently completed the Master Plan and Schematic Design phase and will soon begin Design Development. The Cuningham Group is the architect. A key feature of the plan is preserving, enhancing and integrating two natural arroyos into the overall landscape character of the project. The second project is confidential.

Fairywoods

In the mountainous central region of China we are working to develop a plan for a destination resort featuring year round themed entertainment, multiple hotels, and vacation residences. All this nestled into a valley with natural waterfalls, a beautiful river, mountainous terrain (4000 m) and spectacular views.

Saddleback Leeds Evaluation

As a part of our ongoing work at the Saddleback Church we have been assisting them in pursuing LEED Certification on their latest addition to their campus in Lake Forest, ‘The Student Zone’ an entire building and environs for high school students. It’s great things see them develop pursuing quality in a new dimension, especially after receiving a SC/ASLA Award for the landscape development around their Children’s Ministry Center

Summit Properties Phase 7

The final phase of an office complex in Aliso Viejo, this project is the final phase of work that Tom Skinfill has been doing since 1998. Developed to maximize the outdoor, campus like qualities of the entire development, making the landscape part of the amenities offered to companies and their employees, the project features a range of gathering and social spaces with shade structures, water features and seating.

Floraland

In Chengdu, the capital of the Chinese province of Sichuan, we are working on another phase of the Floraland Amusement Park, with plans that call for hotels, an extensive retail district and an attraction park, all seeking to take advantage of the area’s mild climate and popularity as a vacation destination.

Kovai Coimbatore

Coimbatore, India located in the farthest western reaches of the Tamil Nadu Province is the site of the Kovai Project. 400 acres that are intended to become a center for both resort living and support the areas burgeoning high tech development, this project includes a full 18 holes of golf, resort villas, multifamily housing, office space and community facilities.

Cosbulk Tianjin

A new office tower in the booming downtown of Tianjin, the second largest city in China, The Cosbulk will be attached to an existing office building built next to the Hai He river. In an intensely urban setting like this, paving patterns and textures are the primary tool we used to knit the two projects together, while creating interest and excitement for this cosmopolitan development. It was good to return to Tianjin after we had done a lot of groundwork, doing schematic design for a major theme park in that municipality.

Etnies Skatepark

After 5 years of operation, The Etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest is back in the news after receiving an award of Merit from the Southern California Chapter of the ASLA. We always appreciate compliments and recognition from the other members of our profession.
