Asia Pacific Trade CenterThe Trade Center is a key commercial component in the redevelopment of this section of Port Property. The Center, through its trade function, will attract a significant number of visitors to the district and activity areas for people living in adjacent residential neighborhoods. The outdoor public spaces were designed with this multiplicity of use in mind. Three separate zones were created: the private spaces immediately adjacent to the building to be used for outdoor dining and gathering, the upper level viewing area, which provided excellent opportunities to see the bay and passing ships, and the lower water front promenade, which is the first phase of a much longer bay-front walk system. All three areas are constructed over the parking structure. The design concept used the sea as a metaphor introducing a variety of water related elements. The meandering paths copy the curvilinear forms of waves washing onto the shore. The overlook canopy represents the sails and overlook the bow of the sailing ships. Lights are designed to mimic sea birds in flight and water features reflect the ever-changing patterns of the sea.
