Avila Garden Residence for Seniors

The client desired the character of small-scale outdoor spaces and extensive gardens for the resident’s enjoyment. The building architecture featured individual patios for all ground floor units. The site design responded by providing landscape that provided privacy to the patios and at the same time a unified image to the project.

The main landscape space provides two major landscape areas. The central “green” provides an area for large group seating and exercising. Walks and ramps with gradual slopes were designed to be accessible to the residents and provide opportunities for gentle daily exercise. A variety of plant materials were introduced in order to provide year round interest. Flower color, berries, and ornamental grasses were used in a variety of unusual planting arrangements.

The wild flower garden, features exotic shrub plantings and wildflowers are arranged in a formal setting creating an interesting contrast between the plantings and the man-made elements. Benches were strategically located to take advantage of dramatic views of the adjacent San Gabriel Mountains.

An internal courtyard provided an opportunity to create another distinct landscape space. The space is framed with order Italian Cypress and lavender. Within this formal border are random Sycamores and penisteum grasses, and natural boulders set in decomposed granite.
