Hoag HospitalOver sixteen separate projects have been completed on the Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Campus over the last ten years. The first project began with the development of a “rehab garden” for patients recovering from joint surgery. Ramps designed at different slopes, steps and walks were all incorporated into a garden setting over looking the Lower Newport Bay to help facilitate patient recovery. More recent projects include the Conference Center and Parking garage located on the Lower Campus along Pacific Coast Highway. These two structures created a completely new campus face along PCH requiring a landscape that would create the desired campus image, breakdown the scale of the two structures and identify the new Lower campus main entry. In addition the project provided several outdoor spaces that provided space for meeting participants to enjoy breaks, eat lunch outdoors or just enjoy the fresh air after long hours spent in meetings and presentations. The use of bamboo and other calming plants were incorporated into the designs of these spaces. As the Lower campus became more developed Hospital facility Planners recognized the need to visually link the Upper and Lower campus together. Streetscape plans for Hoag Road were developed to create a strong visual character for the roadway. Queen palms, day lilies, and Chinese fringe flower were incorporated into an overall design theme. As part of these improvements, a new identity signage program was developed and installed at the intersections. The Sue and Bill Gross Women’s Pavilion anchors the upper campus and provides a variety of landscape opportunities. As part of the new building and associated parking structure the perimeter landscapes along Hospital road and Newport Boulevard were improved. A new entrance treatment was designed for the Upper campus entry and the streetscape treatments extended through the upper campus. As part of the Pavilion, a formal entry court was created as were several more private courtyards related to the Patient Education area and the Hospital café and gift shop. Location: Newport Beach, California Role: Landscape Architect Architect: Various Owner: Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Budget: $1,850,000 Date of Completion: 2005
