The Avenue of the PeninsulaOriginally constructed in the 1970’s as a covered mall with two anchor stores, this retail center lost track of the evolving retail marketplace and was losing customers to newer retail developments. In the late 1990's, a major redesign was initiated to reestablish this center as a unique, pedestrian friendly and convenient marketplace filled with premier national retailers, select local merchants, and specialty restaurants. To this end, the redesign introduced an open-air shopping experience by removing the mall roof, supported shoppers-on-foot by converting an adjacent street into a pedestrian paseo, and reinforced the open-air, resort-like ambiance with a new lush landscape of flowering trees and palms. To further set the project apart from its 1970's heritage, pedestrian areas were paved with bold patterns and colors. Water features were added to reinforce entries to major public spaces and help define gathering areas for children. Opening in 1999, the Avenue of the Penisula has been extremely well received by consumers and retailers alike. In contrast to a conventional mall, this open-air, pedestrian friendly center appeals to the discriminating, time-constrained shopper searching for high quality merchandise in a convenient resort-like setting. The specialty center includes distinctive architecture, beautifully appointed design features, abundant landscaping, upscale merchants, outdoor pedestrian plazas and convenient storefront parking. Premier retailers include Parisian, Dillard’s, Gap, Banana Republic, Talbot’s, Williams-Sonoma, Abercrombie & Fitch, Pottery Barn, Ann Taylor, J. Crew, Restoration Hardware, Borders Books & Music, Barnes & Noble, Bath & Body Works, Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Smith & Hawken, Harold's, Chico's, Regal Cinemas, Coldwater Creek, and The Sharper Image.
