Religious Sacred Heart of MaryThe Religious Sacred Heart of Mary is an international community of 1000 women in 14 countries united in a common spirit of faith and enthusiasm for the mission of Jesus Christ, which is lived in community and expressed in a variety of ministries. This unique project provides assisted living for retired nuns of the Order. Located in a residential district, the site planning and landscape design work in concert to provide all rooms with a garden view. The plan features a series of courtyards designed with plants having different and distinct flower color or fruit. Pathways designed to provide exercise were laid out to link each of the gardens and other areas of the site. Trellises were incorporated into the building architecture or as free-standing elements and are planted with wisteria, bougainvillea, and trumpet vine. The trellis design and perimeter fencing and gates were designed to be of a single family residential character using redwood to match the building exterior. An old mill-stone was used as a fountain element and is sited to animate the building entrance and create a special seating area for residents waiting for visitors. Location: City of Montebello Role: Landscape Architect Architect: Gonzalez/Goodale Architects Owner: Religious Sacred Heart of Mary Date of Completion: 2001 Budget: $350,000
