The Refinery (Student Zone) at Saddleback Community ChurchThe 100 acre Saddleback Campus provides spaces for many different kinds of activities and programs, but with this project, the junior high and high school students were given space dedicated to their activities and culture. Named The Refinery, the building uses industrial materials and motifs to set it apart from the other buildings on the campus, relying on the landscape to create continuity with adjacent buildings and the larger campuswide context. Outdoor recreation areas include a rockscape waterfall, sand beaches, sand volleyball courts, rock climbing walls, a pine forest camping area and a skate park. As a part of achieving LEED Gold certification, it applies recycled water with a high efficiency irrigation system, the paving patterns and colors were chosen to reduce reflected heat and light and portions of the roof were planted with low water use grasses and perennials.
